font problems in MikTeX

At work I'm using a Windows PC. While I was preparing an article for a scientific conference, I ran into troubles using MikTeX 2.9. The reason for this is that I inserted some formulas ...

pdflatex aborted with these messages:

Trying to make PK font rntxmi7 at 438 DPI...
Running miktex-makemf.exe...
miktex-makemf: The rntxmi source file could not be found.
Running ttf2pk.exe...
miktex-makepk: PK font rntxmi7 could not be created.

!pdfTeX error: pdflatex (file rntxmi7): Font rntxmi7 at 438 not found
==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!
The font file rntxmi7.tfm is in package newtx, which is installed on my system. Apparently, some fonts are missing and they cannot be generated.

On the web, you often find this solution:

To solve this problem, you have to run
initexmf --mkmaps
initexmf --update-fndb
in the directory of your MiKTeX installation (in my case C:\Program Files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.0\miktex\bin)
But in a multiuser enviroment (like on my work PC with Windows7), this appears not to work.

From the logfile pdflatex writes, we find that the fontmap is C:/Users/lechnerc/AppData/Local/MiKTeX/2.9/pdftex/config/ This fontmap contains no information about the font file (search for "rntx").

As Administrator (use "Run as Administrator" feature, normal users may not modify the file), I tweaked the file c:\program files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex\config\updmap.cfg by adding at the end the line

Please refer to the documentation for more information!

Then I rebuild the catalogue by using the commands from above. The result is now that pdflatex builds the document as expected (because the fontmap now contains also the infos about the newtx fonts).
